The football Championship certainly upped a couple of gears this weekend and fans from great rivals Cork and Kerry left the stadium with many talking points.

The controversial call was made in the 52th minute after Cork’s Mark Collins and James O’Donoghue got tangled up on the edge of the square. O’Donoghue coolly slotted home the penalty.

Cork manager Brian Cuthbert was fuming about the decision and television replays appeared to back up his view.

“It was no penalty. If anything it was a free out. Because Mark Collins went for the ball and he got there first.”

Kerry manager Eamonn Fitzmaurice described the penalty as “soft” while also acknowledging that his side had “got out of jail” on the day. .

As Páirc UI Chaoimh is out of commission due to reconstruction, the replay will return to the scenic Kerry venue on Saturday July 18.
