UEFA, the group in charge of European football, has said that the FIFA presidential election should be postponed.
The statement came after seven officials at the world governing body were arrested as part of a US investigation into rampant corruption.
They are among 14 people accused of racketeering and money laundering.
Some of the claims relate to the decision to award the 2010 World Cup to South Africa.
US Attorney General Loretta Lynch has explained the numerous charges against the men.
"The 47 count indictment against these individuals include charges of racketeering, wire fraud, and money-laundering conspiracies spanning two decades," said Ms Lynch.
