Tony McCoy not expecting ITV call

Tony McCoy does not expect to be part of the new ITV racing team, the former champion jockey told The Guardian.

McCoy has been a regular contributor for Channel 4 Racing since his retirement from the saddle, most recently starring as part of the coverage of York's Ebor Festival.

However, the most successful National Hunt jockey of all-time is contracted to work just one more afternoon for the station, at Ascot on Qipco Champions Day on 15 October.

"Claire (Burns), who looks after me, talked with them (ITV) a while ago but I haven't heard any more," McCoy told The Guardian.

"I don't know what I'm doing with my life at the moment. I definitely haven't made any plans for the future. I've only got one day left on Channel 4, so we'll see how it goes.

"They seem to have announced their presenters and I wish them the best of luck and hope they do well."

ITV becomes the exclusive terrestrial broadcaster partner for British racing from 2017.

Former Sky Sports presenter Ed Chamberlin, a close friend of McCoy's, will be the new host when the contract begins on January 1.

He will be assisted by Francesca Cumani, daughter of Newmarket trainer, Luca, during the Flat season.

Grand National and Gold Cup-winning rider Mick Fitzgerald will make the move from Channel 4 to ITV, it was confirmed earlier this week.

Hayley Turner, Oli Bell, Sally Ann Grassick and Rishi Persad are other names in the frame when the new era of televised racing begins next year.

"It's very hard to say there was an awful lot wrong with Channel 4 but now ITV has got it I hope they do the best for racing," said McCoy.

"It's going to be a hard thing for them to keep everyone happy. One thing they need to cater for is the older audience. I'm not sure about just bringing in a lot of young people, because racing has an older audience.

"I'd like to think that they'll do a good job for racing, and that when I put the racing on, on a Saturday afternoon, I can watch it and enjoy it."
