A strong team of 11 has named to represent Ireland at the European Indoor Athletics Championships, which get underway in Gothenburg on Friday.
The selection falls along selected lines, comprising of those who met qualifying standards set by Athletics Ireland during the indoor season.
Brian Gregan of Clonliffe Harriers is considered a strong hope for a medal, after setting the fastest time in Europe this year over 400m, 46.07 seconds, in beating both Borlee brothers at the Flanders meeting in Gent a fortnight ago.
Four-time Championship medallist and 2006 world indoor champion Derval O’Rourke of Leevale AC is seeking her second European indoor medal after scooping bronze in Turin four years ago.
The one element of bad news has seen team management avoid a selection headache as West Waterford’s David McCarthy misses out in the 3000m due to illness, allowing John Travers of Donore Harriers and Stephen Scullion of North Belfast Harriers compete alongside Ciarán Ó Lionaird, the 10th-placer at the World Championships in Daegu 18 months ago.
Double European cross-country champion Fionnuala Britton is in the womens 3000 in her first indoor campaign, Claire Tarplee of Dundrum South Dublin competes in the 1500 and Rose-Anne Galligan of Newbridge AC and Ciara Everard of UCD are in the 800.
Galligan only set her qualifying time on Saturday night in a special meeting at Athlone IT on their new indoor track.
Elsewhere, Amy Foster of City of Lisburn goes in the 60 flat, and Tori Pena of Finn Valley has qualified in the women’s pole vault.
Mark English of Letterkenny, fifth in the World Juniors in Barcelona last year, is skipping Gothenburg to concentrate on this summer’s European Under 23s in Tampere.
