Sweetnam and Ryan miss out as 8 uncapped players named in Ireland summer tour squad

Ireland have named eight uncapped players in the Ireland squad to tour the USA and Japan this summer, but there is no room for Munster stars Darren Sweetnam and Donnacha Ryan.

Ireland's first game will see the side take on the US Eagles in New Jersey on June 10 before travelling to Japan for two Tests on June 17 and 24.

Jamie Heaslip and Rob Kearney have also missed out, with both players currently injured.

The eight uncapped players are John Cooney, Dave Heffernan, Rory O'Loughlin, Andrew Porter, James Ryan, Rory Scannell, Jacob Stockdale and Kieran Treadwell.

Head coach Joe Schmidt has also included experienced stars such as Simon Zebo, Devin Toner and Cian Healy despite having 11 players heading to New Zealand with the British and Irish Lions.

Speaking about the squad, Schmidt said: "With eleven players due to tour with the British and Irish Lions, plus a number of injuries to experienced internationals, the summer tour squad includes plenty of youth.

"There is a real freshness to the group, including the coaching staff, so we're looking forward to what will be a very challenging summer tour."

Alluding to the fact that some of his more senior players could still be late call-ups for the Lions, Schmidt added:

"We have retained a sprinkling of experienced players, some of whom may yet be called up to the Lions, but the focus is really on challenging the younger players to cope with the heat and foreign conditions as well as the speed and physicality of test rugby."

An additional player will be added to the squad following the weekend's provincial fixtures.

There are new faces on the coaching ticket for Ireland as well, with Racing 92's Ronan O'Gara accompanying the team for the New Jersey leg of the tour and Leinster's Girvan Dempsey with the group for the first week in Japan. Munster's Felix Jones will work with the team for the final week of the tour in Tokyo.
