Sean Cavanagh issues statement amid Tyrone funding row
Tyrone captain Sean Cavanagh has released a statement to say that the county’s footballers are “very well resourced”, .
The short statement, released on behalf of the panel, addresses a controversy sparked by an anonymous player email released to Newstalk, which claimed that “month after month of cut after cut” were hurting team morale.
It cited a £15 (€17.50) contribution towards training equipment asked of players as an example of such penny-pinching.
Ronan McNamee told the Irish Examiner today: “It wasn’t a million miles off the mark, definitely not.
“It’s hard to know how to talk about it, but nobody in the dressing room would disagree with the statement.
“There are underlying issues and so on that need to be ironed out.”
However, Cavanagh’s statement contradicts this.
“On behalf of the Tyrone senior football squad (2017), I wish to make it known that we are very well resourced by the County Board, Club Tyrone and our other sponsors and brand partners,” wrote Cavanagh.
“Yes, there were some issues of a minor nature but these matters are being addressed.
“We are most grateful for the continued support of the County Board, Club Tyrone and our other generous sponsors.”
An Irish Independent report revealed that Tyrone spent £412,200 (€484,127) on preparing their teams last year, the eighth-lowest of all counties.
