Ryder Cup match by match and fourballs teams

The United States lead Europe 6 1/2 to 5 1/2 after the morning foursomes on day two of the Ryder Cup.

Europe trailed 5-3 going into day two of the 41st Ryder Cup at Hazeltine in Minnesota.

Here, we recap how the matches unfolded:

FOURSOMES

Rory McIlroy and Thomas Pieters beat Rickie Fowler and Phil Mickelson 4&2

Unsurprisingly kept together following their brilliant fourballs win on Friday, McIlroy and Pieters again gelled superbly and birdied the first two holes, Pieters raising his finger to his lips to silence the crowd after following Fowler in at the first.

A par was good enough to win the fourth and Mickelson was forced into his second right-handed shot in two days on the fifth after Fowler's drive ended up against a boundary fence. Mickelson holed from 50 feet for par to avoid going four down on the eighth and birdied the 10th after McIlroy had missed a short par putt on the ninth.

However, the European pair regained their composure to birdie the 11th and although they made a mess of the next, they eventually finished the match in style with birdies on the 15th and 16th.

Match score: Europe 4 USA 5

Brandt Snedeker and Brooks Koepka beat Henrik Stenson and Matt Fitzpatrick 3&2

Fitzpatrick made his first appearance alongside Open champion Stenson as Davis Love kept the winning fourball pairing of Snedeker and Koepka together.

The European pair were swiftly two down after early bogeys, but got back on level terms with birdies on the seventh and 11th, the latter after a superb chip to within inches of the hole from Fitzpatrick.

Koepka then shanked his second shot to the 12th but saw it hit a tree and stop short of the water as the hole was halved in bogey fives. The home pair made the most of that stroke of luck with birdies on the next four holes and any faint European hopes were sunk when Fitzpatrick found the water with his approach to the 16th.

Europe 4 USA 6

Justin Rose and Chris Wood beat Jimmy Walker and Zach Johnson 1 up

Wood missed a five-foot putt at the sixth to squander a chance to go ahead as the hole was halved in bogey sixes.

Europe finally went ahead with Wood's eight-foot birdie putt at the seventh and Rose's brilliant approach to the 10th doubled the lead.

Even though Wood missed an eight-foot birdie on the par-three 13th Johnson lipped out for par from two-feet for a half. Wood's putt to halve the next burned the edge and when Rose inexplicably went for the 16th in two and found the lake, their advantage was one but two pars were enough for a vital point.

Europe 5 USA 6

Sergio Garcia and Rafa Cabrera Bello halved with Patrick Reed and Jordan Spieth

The USA's top pair made four birdies in five holes to go three up, although Europe made an excellent half on the fifth after Garcia's tee shot ended up in a marshal's pocket. Spieth and Reed turned in 31, and when Garcia missed a 18-inch putt at the 11th Europe were four down.

Reed missed the green at the par-three 13th to give their opponents a glimmer of hope and when Spieth hit his approach to the 15th into the water their lead was just two. Garcia holed a 10ft birdie at the next to set up a tense finish. Cabrera Bello putted in from the 17th fringe to make it all square and Garcia sank a nervy two-footer for a half at the last.

Score: Europe 5 1/2 USA 6 1/2
