Top seed Rafael Nadal advanced to the quarter-finals of the Argentina Open after a rusty 6-4 6-4 victory over Juan Monaco in Buenos Aires.

Nadal dropped serve three times as he returned to his preferred surface of play against a player in his first tournament for six months following wrist surgery.

Second-seeded David Ferrer had an easier time of things as he eased through with a 6-2 6-2 win over wildcard Renzo Olivo.

Pablo Cuevas, the number eight seed, beat Santiago Giraldo 6-4 6-2 and Paolo Lorenzi overcame Diego Schwartzman 4-6 6-3 6-1 to book a last-eight battle with Nadal.
