Rossiter announces surprise Wexford retirement

Keith Rossiter has unexpectedly retired from Wexford hurling after 11 years on the senior panel.

The 31-year-old told the Irish Independent that he had planned for the 2014 season to be his last at inter-county level.

"It's something I've been thinking about probably since last year," Rossiter said.

"In my own eyes I'd have looked at 2014, coming into that season, as being my last one. No one knew that, but it was always at the back of my mind."

Rossiter said he had given his all last season and felt he would be unable to do the same again.

"I really went at it last year. I left no stone unturned. I did every bit of training that all the guys were doing and did more myself,” he explained.

“At this stage of my career, the body's not able to go through what it used to be able to go through. I'm not saying I'm beat, but for inter county level at the minute, you have to be a hundred and ten per cent right."

Rossiter made his senior debut for Wexford in 2004 and captained the side in 2006.

The Oulert-the-Ballagh clubman has five Wexford titles with the side and also won the Fitzgibbon Cup three times with WIT.
