Rosberg has cheeky birthday message for Hamilton

Nico Rosberg is hoping age catches up with Lewis Hamilton this year after cheekily declaring his Mercedes team-mate as “old”.

Double Formula One world champion Hamilton was celebrating his 30th birthday on Wednesday, offering Rosberg the opportunity to have a funny dig at the man who denied him the world title last season.

Via his Twitter account, Rosberg said: “HappyBirthdayLewis – 30!! Have a great party! This day is good for me. You are old now, so hopefully it will be easier for me this year :-).”

He repeated the message in German to ensure it reached a maximum audience.

Hamilton and Rosberg endured a titanic struggle for the championship in 2014, with the duo’s relationship taking bitter blows following incidents in Monaco and Belgium.

The latter at Spa, where Hamilton failed to finish due to car damage sustained from a lap two puncture inflicted by Rosberg, led to a stunning response from the Briton.

Hamilton went on to win six of the final seven races, and was runner-up in the other, en route to claiming his second crown six years after his maiden title triumph.

There was also a thawing in relations between the duo after the final race in Abu Dhabi, so prompting Rosberg, who will be 30 himself on June 27, to now tease Hamilton.

Via his own Twitter feed, and in response to the numerous birthday greetings, Hamilton said: “Thank you all for the birthday wishes! What a journey it has been. This is only the beginning!”
