Ireland’s Olympic medallist and latest world champion Paul O’Donovan is looking forward to partying in his native Skibbereen in Co Cork on Monday.

“It’ll be massive, I tell ya –put an extension on to the town for the night, we’re a bit worried about what’s going to happen,” he told Cork 96FM’s Trevor Welch on The Score.

“We’ll take it as it comes, sure it'll all be a bit of craic anyway and hopefully everyone will enjoy it, and there’ll be some kids out that’ll enjoy it as well and they might take away something for future years as well, get a bit of inspiration you know?

“That’s what it’s all about, really.”

Earlier in the 96FM interview, he paid tribute to his local club for keeping him and his brother Gary “on the straight and narrow”.

“The two of us owe a lot to Skibbereen Rowing Club, they’ve been a massive help to us over the years,” he said.

He went on to talk about his hopes that their success of would help develop the sport in Ireland.

“We’re happy now to kinda continue developing the sport even further, and hopefully all the rowing clubs around Ireland, and the Skibbereen Rowing Club, will get new members now after this,” he said.

“We’ll just hopefully be there to try to encourage them along as well and open up some opportunities for some other youngsters in west Cork and Ireland.”
