SPIN South West opened up a real can of worms on their Facebook page yesterday when it posted a screenshot of a conversation between a boyfriend and girlfriend about changing plans for sporting reasons.
The unnamed couple are having a lively exchange of views about what appears to be his intention to cancel a pre-arranged date in order to watch UL play - in a
game. And yes - that’s assuming the person cancelling is male and the unimpressed other half is female - we’re going to go with the most likely situation on this one.
The Championship part doesn’t appear to hold much sway with his girlfriend, but is clearly a deal breaker in his head: “But it’s the f**king championship.
“What part of this isn’t getting through to you”.
The post triggered an avalanche of reaction, with more than 6000 likes and 452 shares so far.
The conversation in the picture is an old one (UL aren’t involved in any championship at this time of year), but the theme is universal - and has so far attracted more than 2000 comments with a variety of views.
Naturally, a strong male contingent showed up to commiserate with the guy on his girlfriend’s lack of understanding, and agree that
the championship is more important than any old date. And plenty of female commentators shared their own tales of woe, when it came to rescheduled dates, broken promises and even - horror of horrors - cancelled holidays. The upcoming Premier League was mentioned frequently, and not in a good way.
It’s not all about the stereotypes through, there were women who were just as interested in sport - many of whom were too busy playing their own matches to be too fussed about what the menfolk were up to.
