Niamh Briggs named as Irish women's captain for Six Nations
Niamh Briggs will captain the Irish women’s rugby team in the upcoming Six Nations tournament.
The 30-year-old, who was nominated for the IRB Women’s Player of the Year 2014 after her World Cup heroics, replaces the retired Fiona Coughlan.

Briggs, a Waterford native, said she is honoured to be chosen to lead Ireland.
"It's a massive privilege to represent your country at any level, but to captain your country is a great honour and I was delighted to be asked,” she said.
"It's a hugely proud moment for me and for my family who have been great support throughout my career.
"To follow in the footsteps of an unbelievable leader in Fiona Coghlan is a fantastic honour and I look forward to captaining this great squad.”
Briggs made her Ireland debut in the 2008 Six Nations and has 45 caps to date.
She was also nominated for an RTÉ Sport Award after a year that saw her top-scorer at the Women's Rugby World Cup.
Briggs was chosen as captain by Anthony Eddy, Director of Sevens and Women's Rugby.
"There has been a lot of change in the women's set-up, with several uncapped players and a new coaching team,” Eddy explained. “Niamh's experience, at the highest level will bring a continuity of leadership within the squad.
"She has always set a terrific standard as a player and we know she will continue to do so as captain.”
Ireland’s women open their Six Nations campaign on February 6 when they take on Italy at the Stadio Mario Lodigiani.
