McKillop to receive special award at Paralympics closing ceremony

The closing ceremony of the 2012 Paralympic Games is taking place in London tonight.

The Taoiseach Enda Kenny and the President Michael D Higgins have congratulated all 49 Irish athletes for their outstanding performance during the past ten days.

Team Ireland finished 18th in the medals table - winning eight gold medals, three silver and five bronze.

Double gold medal winner Michael McKillop will tonight receive a special award from the International Paralympic Committee - for demonstrating the best spirit of the Paralympic Games.

Spokesperson for Paralympic's Ireland John Fullham said that he is one of just two athletes to receive this award:

"Michael is a fine athlete and he is done so much more outside of his sport in terms of education, working with school children, getting people involved, I think it is well deserved"

"And I'm glad he gets that recognition and it's a great honour for all of us we'll all piggyback on that success".
