Man United to face Barcelona on US tour

Manchester United will play Barcelona during a four-match tour of the United States this summer, the club have announced.

Louis van Gaal’s men will also face Paris St Germain, Club America and San Jose Earthquakes during the pre-season trip.

The fixtures will be part of the International Champions Cup, a tournament United won last year.

Mexico City-based Club America will be the first opponents at Seattle’s CenturyLink Field on July 17 before the game against Major League Soccer side San Jose four days later.

Santa Clara’s Levi’s Stadium will be the venue for the Barcelona game on July 25 with the trip concluding against PSG at Soldier Field in Chicago on July 29.

Manchester United group managing director Richard Arnold said: “Manchester United have a great history of visiting these US cities, creating memorable experiences for players and fans that date back as far as the 1950s.

“After this month’s Manchester derby broke records to become the most-watched Premier League match in US cable television history, the club are excited to be returning to the United States at a time when the appetite for football is greater than ever.”

The 10-team International Champions Cup, which also features Chelsea, will be decided via a league format with each club playing four matches.

Last season’s event – which United won after beating Liverpool in the final - proved a big success. A US-record 109,318 fans watched United play Real Madrid in Michigan.
