Kilmallock made to fight for Munster title

Kilmallock 1-32 Cratloe 3-18 (AET)

Kilmallock were forced to dig deep before delivering their third AIB Munster SHC title this afternoon, courtesy of an extra-time win over Cratloe.

Jake Mulcahy delivered a Man of the Match performance, scoring 1-6, in a game which Cratloe only scored three points in extra-time.

Fergal Horgan gave a powerful first-half display for Cratloe, but the Clare champions trailed by 0-12 to 1-6 at the break.

Cratloe started brightly and led by 1-3 to 0-1 after 10 minutes following a Conor McGrath goal.

But Kilmallock came storming back, with Graeme Mulcahy firing five points, with Brian O’Sullivan, Eoin Ryan and Kevin O'Donnell also on target as the Limerick side claimed a three-point interval lead.

On the restart, Kilmallock kept on top for large periods, but Cratloe never gave up.

David Collins worked hard to bring Cratloe into contention, with a Cathal McInerney goal cutting the gap to the minimum with 12 mites remaining.

Kilmallock were reduced to 14 men following a red card for Gavin O’Mahony, after an off the ball incident.

Cratloe battled back, and led by 2-12 to 0-17 with six minutes remaining, before Eoin Ryan slotted over an equaliser.

Kilmallock powered two points in front, following Mulcahy’s goal, after good support work by Robbie Egan.

1-19 to 2-14 ahead Kilmallock looked like cementing a third provincial success, but amazingly Cratloe snuck in for a third goal, with Conor McGrath finishing to the net, after an initial save by the Kilmallock keeper.

The Limerick side failed to wilt, with Jake Mulcahy levelling the tie on the stroke of 60 minutes.

Graeme Mulcahy looked like he had snatch a winner, but Cratloe forced extra-time thanks to a Martin ‘Ogie’ Murphy score.

Both sides traded scores in the opening period of extra-time, with Jake Mulcahy, Paudie O’Brien and Brian O'Sullivan on target for Kilmallock as they moved 1-27 to 3-18 ahead at the interval.

Conor McGrath and Podge Collins kept Cratloe in touch, but crucially they failed to score on the restart.

Kilmallock were in command in the closing period, firing five unanswered points, with Eoin Ryan, Jake Mulcahy and Paudie O’Brien on target on the way to an eight point win.
