Ireland crushed Canada by 10 wickets in Dubai to keep alive their hopes of qualifying for the World Twenty20 tournament.

Ireland openers Paul Stirling (61 not out) and William Porterfield (42no) knocked off a modest Canada target of 106 for eight in just 9.3 overs.

It was the Irish bowlers who set up victory though as they tore through Canada’s middle-order, at one stage claiming four for 17.

Teenage spinner George Dockrell took three for 19 while medium-pacer Max Sorensen was similarly effective as he snared three for 20.

Skipper Porterfield and Stirling, who crashed three sixes in his 32-ball knock, then made light work of the chase to progress to tomorrow’s elimination semi-final against Holland.

Ireland must win that game to set up a showdown with either Afghanistan or Namibia to reach the final and book a place at the World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka later this year.
