Ireland and Surrey shared the points at Stormont after rain forced their C&G Trophy tie to be abandoned with just 15 overs on the board.

In overcast conditions, play finally got under way at midday and Surrey’s James Benning provided a brief highlight crashing a quick-fire half-century before more rain intervened stopping the opener in his tracks.

The right-hander raced to 61 not out off just 41 balls, including two sixes and seven fours, leaving Surrey on 100 for two.

The visitors had made the worst possible start when Irish skipper Trent Johnson – who won the toss and opted to bowl – clean bowled Jon Batty for a duck in the first over.

Former England man Mark Butcher notched 24 off just 24 balls before edging a Dave Langford-Smith delivery to wicket-keeper Jeremy Bray and Mark Ramprakash added 11 before a torrential downpour forced play to be suspended.

And after an early lunch and with no sign of the skies clearing the umpires were forced to call an early halt to proceedings.
