Ireland secure three medals on successful day at European Boxing Championships

Update 6pm: Joe Ward has powered his way to a third European medal, adding to earlier successes by Brendan Irvine and Kurt Walker, writes Stephen Barry.

Ward, a European champion in 2011 and 2015, eased past Scotland’s Sean Lazzerini to guarantee himself at least a bronze medal.

The light-heavyweight drew blood from Lazzerini’s nose in the first round and eased to a 5-0 unanimous decision.

All five judges gave every round to Ward, with one even marking it 30:24 in the Moate-man’s favour, such was his dominance.

Ward will be joined in the semi-finals by Irvine and Walker, with Sean McComb the only Irish boxer to lose in today’s quarter-finals. “Some things never change” is how he greeted his exit on a tight judges’ decision.

Update 4.40pm: Brendan Irvine has made it a pair of guaranteed medals for Ireland, following Kurt Walker’s victory at the European Boxing Championships.

The flyweight won a unanimous verdict against the industrious Gabriel Escobar of Spain.

Irvine took all three rounds in the eyes of two judges, with the three others awarding him a 29:28 decision.

The Belfast boxer will add at least a bronze medal to his European Games silver from 2015.

Ireland’s only double European gold medallist Joe Ward will be the final Irish boxer in the ring today.

Original story: Kurt Walker has secured Ireland’s first medal from the European Boxing Championships in the Ukraine, writes Stephen Barry.

The three-time national champion from Antrim guaranteed himself at least a bronze medal with a split decision victory over Raffaele Di Serio.

The Italian bantamweight had the better of the first round but Walker convinced the judges in rounds two and three to earn a 3-1 victory, with the fifth judge calling it a tie.

Sean McComb, who beat the world number one Vitaly Dunaytsev on Monday, lost a close split decision to England's Luke McCormack.

The Belfast light-welterweight lost 3-2, with two judges awarding McComb all three rounds, but the other three giving McCormack a narrow 29-28 decision.

McComb has already qualified for the World Championships thanks to his performances earlier this week.

Brendan Irvine and Joe Ward will be in quarter-final action later this afternoon.
