Ireland defender Shane Duffy tweets response to criticism over Martin McGuinness tribute

Ireland and Brighton defender Shane Duffy tweeted his sympathies this morning after news broke of the death of Martin McGuinness.

Duffy said on the social media site: "More tragic news this morning, RIP Martin McGuinness a true hero for many of us."

The tweet generated a mixed response. Many felt it was inappropriate considering where he plays his football - Brighton.

Brighton was one of the areas targeted during The Troubles when five people died at the Conservative party conference at Brighton’s Grand Hotel in 1984 after an IRA bombing.

Some referred to the tweet as shameful, while one stated it was "a truly ridiculous tweet considering who he plays for."

Duffy was quick to respond, however, stating: "I'll always stand by what and who I support, it's the way I was brought up."

Duffy also praised the comments of BBC Breakfast presenter Dan Walker who said: "Understand the very strong opinions on Martin McGuinness but his death is significant. He was a pivotal figure in politics."
