Heffernan to lead Irish athletics team in Europe

Rob Heffernan will lead an Irish team of 25 athlete’s to Zurich for next months Europeans, which take place from August 12 – 17.

Rob Heffernan will lead an Irish team of 25 athlete’s to Zurich for next months Europeans, which take place from August 12 – 17.

"I am really looking forward to the huge challenge that lies ahead in Zurich and look forward to bringing more national pride to Ireland”. Heffernan said at the teams announcement.

Ciaran O’Lionard’s victory at yesterday’s national track and field championships secured one of only three places in the 1500 meters.

O’Lionard, John Travers, Paul Robinson and Dave McCarthy all have the standard for Zurich, although the competitions rule’s only allow three athlete’s per competition.

West Waterford’s Dave McCarthy is the unlucky man who misses out,

5,000 meter runner Sarah Collins and pole vaulter Tori Pena have secured the standard for Zurich but withdrew from selection.

The team’s numbers are boosted due to the first inclusion of the European team cup in the marathon competition.

Paul Pollock who finished second European at last year’s European championships will be joined on the men’s team by Dublin City marathon winner Sean Hehir along with Ulster pair Kevin Seaward and Thomas Frazer.

Thomas Barr, Mark English and Brian Gregan, all aim for individual medals in their respective events, will also form a 4 x 400 meters relay team, which has
