Golfer visits fan after stray ball leaves her needing stitches

American golfer Tony Finau proved himself to be a real gentleman at the weekend, taking the time to visit a golf fan he had accidentally injured at a tournament.

Finau was playing in the in the Dean & Deluca Invitational in Texas, which was won yesterday by local boy Jordan Spieth.

He was playing well until a shot at the 11th hole on Saturday pulled left and hit a young spectator.

“After the incident, it was kind of hard to erase it from my mind just because of the image. She was bleeding from head to toe,” Finau told the Golf Channel afterwards. “It was hard for me to kind of regroup mentally. I felt like, ‘I hope I didn’t kill somebody’.”

The golfer decided he owed the fan a visit to see how she was. He got her address from tournament organisers and drove to her parent's house to surprise her with flowers and chocolates.

“I felt like I had to,” Finau said. “I just wanted to make sure she was OK, just for my peace of mind.”

The fan, a young woman called Elisa, was delighted with his visit and thanked him afterwards on Instagram.

“Yesterday at the Colonial golf tournament, his golf ball bounced off my head and went back into play,” she wrote. “Luckily I am ok and all I needed was a few stitches.

“In a very stand up gesture, he showed up at my doorstep with flowers, chocolates, a get well soon card, and he stayed and talked with us for a bit. I wish you the best of luck in the tour going forward! - Signed, your new favorite fan, Elisa.”
