Giant-killer Jana Cepelova dumps out second seed Garbine Muguruza

Reigning French Open champion Garbine Muguruza crashed out of Wimbledon as world number 124 Jana Cepelova created a major upset.

In the biggest shock yet of this year's championships, Cepelova took the scalp of a player who was also runner-up at Wimbledon to Serena Williams 12 months ago.

Fresh from winning her maiden grand slam title in Paris at the start of June, Muguruza had suggested it could be a difficult transition from clay to grass, but few would have imagined a 6-3 6-2 second-round defeat on the horizon for the world number two.

That was Cepelova's stunning margin of victory on Court One though, as the Slovakian sped through to the third round.

It meant that for the second successive year at Wimbledon, Cepelova has ousted a high-ranking seed, having toppled number three Simona Halep on her last visit.

Cepelova also has a win over Serena Williams on her CV, from Charleston in 2014, but her overall career record does not match up to her headline-grabbing victories.

In the last two months the 23-year-old has twice lost on the low-level International Tennis Federation tour to players from outside the top 250, and she failed to qualify for Roland Garros.

Yet she had it almost entirely her own way against a subdued Muguruza, as the Spaniard failed to find anything remotely resembling the form of a major winner.

Cepelova said: "I'm so happy. I played really well and I think I deserved to win.

"I'm really surprised. I didn't expect to win these two sets.

"Last year I beat Halep on this court and I have great memories. I'm so happy, so happy.

"I have beaten some great players and I'm very satisfied with this."
