Dwyer lets lead slip in Paralympics dressage Freestyle final
Kilkenny native James Dwyer added a sixth place in the Freestyle final to his team bronze medal at the Paralympics this morning in London, on his 16 year-old gelding Orlando.
In gold medal position on a score of 74.400 from the halfway mark of the Grade IV competition, the 42-year-old saw his lead gradually eroded, with gold eventually going to Belgium's Michele George and Rainman with a mark of 82.100, with Britain taking Silver, Sophie Wells scoring 81.150 on Pinocchio.
Bronze was taken by Frank Hosmar of the Netherlands with Alphaville, on a mark of 78.600.
Dwyer has been based in Unionville, Pennsylvania in the United States for some years, and with his Dutch-bred horse has achieved numerous successes in Para Equestrian dressage, the most notable before the Paralympics being an fifth-placed finish in the 2010 World Equestrian Games.
Irish silver medallist Helen Kearney and fellow team member Geraldine Savage will compete in the Grade 1a Freestyle later this afternoon.
