Conor McGregor defiant after €135,000 fine

Conor McGregor has received a $150,000 (€135,000) fine and been ordered to serve 50 hours of community service for his part in an altercation at a UFC 202 press conference, writes Stephen Barry.

As part of the ruling, McGregor will have to take part in an anti-bullying public service announcement, which will be funded by part of the fine.

The Nevada Athletic Commission unanimously decided on the punishment after a hearing into McGregor and Nate Diaz throwing bottles and other objects at each other three days before their August bout.

The fine is 5% of McGregor’s $3million (€2.7million) payment for his part in the record-breaking fight and significantly higher than the $25,000 (€22,500) initially recommended by the Nevada Attorney General.

“I just want to apologise for the incident,” McGregor told the Commission over the phone.

“It was a very unusual incident even as I saw it unfolding. I acted wrong, and all I can say is I'm sorry and I will learn from this.

“This fight had everything on the line for me. This was the highest paid fight I'd ever been in. I was in a different mindset.

“So all I can do is learn from it and learn to handle myself better if I find myself in a situation like that again.”

However he brushed aside the size of the fine on Twitter…

“I get fined more than these bums get paid,” wrote the featherweight champion and lightweight contender.

At the time of the incident UFC President Dana White said he expected a punishment including “massive fines, suspensions, community service”.

Diaz is yet to have a hearing for his role in the incident.
