Britton takes title at track and field championships

Fionnuala Britton sprinted to the Women’s 5,000 metre title at today’s Glo Health Senior track and field championships in Santry stadium.

Britton battled for long periods with Dublin marathon champion Maria McCambridge over 12 and a half laps of the Santry track, before Britton hit the gas with three laps remaining.

“I’m happy with that victory” admitted Britton, “I’m a bit embarrassed over the way I just left Maria there” Britton joked.

“I had to run the 5,000 because I’m entered in that event for Zurich, I’ll run the 1500 tomorrow, as I need the speed for Zurich.”

Britton duly won her 1500 metre in 4:30.83, less than 60 minutes after taking the 5,000 metre gold medal.

Kelly Proper picked up 200 metre and long jump gold and may yet aim for a third gold medal in the 100 metres tomorrow.

“It’s great coming out when the weather is good and being able to run well” admitted Proper after picking up her 200 metre gold.

“I’ve been running around Europe since the end of May trying to run faster than 23:35. Last Friday night in Germany I ran 23:16 and tonight I ran 23:23 into a head wind.”

“I’m really delighted to be in this form” admitted Proper who picked up three gold medals at the 2013 championships and still have the 100 metres to go.

“I’ll see how I’ll feel in the morning” admitted Proper. “I have only ran one 100 metre race this year, my focus is the European’s.”

The 26-year-old Ferrybank athlete will make her return to international competition at the European championships in Zurich in the 200 metres.

Zoe Brown picked up her first national outdoor title to dislodge Tori Pena for the top of the Irish rankings.

Brown’s jump of 4.30 was enough to grab the gold medal in Santry, with defending champion and national record holder Tori Pena failing at four metres 30.

“I just went out wanting the win” admitted Pena. “I had a plan executed it, got the win end of message.”

“I’ll wrap myself in cotton wool before Glasgow,” admitted Brown. “I’ll go to Zurich and look to jump four-metres-60, which would make me more competitive.”

Sara Tracey showed power and aggression to take the women’s steeplechase title in 9.59.74 well clear of Leevales Michelle Finn.

The men’s 200 metre gold medal was shared between Eanna Maden of Carrick on Shannon and David Hynes of Menapians, with posting times of 21:42.
