Britton retains Antrim crown

Fionnuala Britton was a runaway winner of the IAAF International cross country in Antrim today.

Britton set down a marker from the gun immediately pulling away from the field leaving the rest of the field to battle of the silver medal.

She opened up a 15-second lead right from the gun on Louise Damon, with Madaglene Masai and Linda Byrne battling for the silver medal.

Britton stayed strong throughout the race and came home in 18 minutes 31 seconds with England’s Louise Damon second some 15 seconds back, and Kenya’s Masai taking the bronze and Linda Byrne settling for fourth

Britton said: “It’s nice to back and all the support here makes it so much better!”

“I planned just to go out hard from the gun and see how it went, the course was flat so It worked well.”

Britton will now aim to gain the European indoor qualifying standard with indoor races before the European Indoor Championships in Gothenburg on March 1.
