Karim Benzema’s goal last night for Real Madrid was the club’s 1000th goal in European competition.
The Spanish side may be having a slow start to their domestic season, but they demolished Basle 5-1 last night to show they are a force to be reckoned with in the Champions League.
Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and World Cup wonderkid James Rodriguez had all found the net before Benzema scored the defending champion’s fifth goal of the night and wrote himself into the history books.

Ten-time European champions Real Madrid are the first club to reach the milestone of 1000 goals. Barcelona are the next most prolific club in Europe and they would have to score 20 goals tonight to equal their Spanish rivals.
