'Belgium played Bosnia on a cow pasture': Former international rips into US team

Former American international Taylor Twellman let loose at the US team after they failed to qualify for the World Cup for the first time in 32 years, writes Stephen Barry.

A goal from Borussia Dortmund wonderkid Christian Pulisic wasn't enough to pull back a two-goal deficit against the already eliminated Trinidad and Tobago. Meanwhile, Panama and Honduras both secured shock wins to sink the US from an automatic qualification spot to fifth in the six-team group.

Falling behind Panama was a particular surprise, having beaten the small country that has never before been to the World Cup 4-0 last Friday.

As you can imagine, some of the reaction boiled over into anger.

On ESPN News, Twellman, who got 30 caps between 2002 and 2009, was annoyed the criticism was so long in coming.

"The gloves should have been off years ago. We should have been having real criticism. And the discussion after Brazil, Max, was 'Can we beat the Colombias and the Belgiums and the Argentinas of the world?'

"You kidding me? We can't beat Trinidad on a field that's too wet and too heavy?

"What are we doing? What are we doing!?"

"It's remarkable to me, when I go on this stupid thing right here (brandishes his mobile phone), how ignorant people are when the rest of the world... Belgium played Bosnia on a cow pasture."

Earlier, Twellman said: "As a whole, US Soccer is not prepared. They have not done a good enough job of getting this group ready to play.

"Every single one of those players (will have) nightmares for the rest of their lives.

"This is an utter embarrassment. With the amount of money that is in Major League Soccer and is in this sport, you can't get a draw, a tie, against Trinidad?

"Max, you don't deserve to go to the World Cup, plain and simple."

But the final word on the US team, as always, goes to Soccer Guy:
