A 25-year-old rugby player in Australia died yesterday as a result of injuries sustained on Saturday in a tragic accident on the pitch.
Nicholas Tooth, who played in the second row for the Quirindi Lions, was involved in a clash of heads with a player from the Narrabri Blue Boars in a regional match between the two sides.
“It really was just a tragic accident,” said Charles Murray, president of the Quirindi Lions club.
“Nick went in to tackle an opponent and his head clashed with shoulder and he went down.”
Tooth was first treated on the pitch before being airlifted to hospital, but died on Sunday.
A statement on the club’s Facebook page read: “The Quirindi Rugby club would like to send their deepest condolences to the Tooth family on the loss of Nick. The loss of this kind hearted and fine young man will be felt far and wide.
“The club would like to offer their support to everyone who has been touched by this tragic loss. The players and club members thank everyone for their thoughts and support at this sad time”.
