Athlete robbed during mum's funeral

British Olympic athlete Andy Turner has appealed for help on Twitter after his family home was burgled as he attended his mother’s funeral.

The 33-year-old athlete, who took bronze in the 110 metres hurdles at the 2011 World Championships in Daegu, took to his Twitter page andyturner110h last night to vent his anger over the break-in on the day of his mother Yvonne’s funeral.

He tweeted: “Please help, my mum’s funeral today, whilst at the function, we were burgled and everything was stolen including my car, laptop, phone plus loads of other stuff.

“My car is a white Ranger Rover Sport L10 run but looks like 110 run, RT please.

“Can’t believe these people could do this on a day like today, please help catch them. Please RT this and get these people caught.

“This happened in Hucknall in Nottingham around 8pm tonight, please help if u see a White Range Rover Sport or Mac please phone the police.”

Mr Turner, who was born in Hucknall, said he was “absolutely devastated” by the break-in. His 58-year-old mother died suddenly on October 29.

On the day of her death, Mr Turner had tweeted: “The worst possible end to the worst 8 days of my life”.

In the days following, he thanked friends and well-wishers for their support and posted details of the funeral service on his Twitter page.

A spokeswoman for Nottinghamshire Police said they were keeping an ``open mind'' over the possibility that the house had been targeted by thieves who knew about the funeral.

She said: “Police are investigating a break-in at a house in Nottingham Road, Hucknall, that happened some time between 2pm and 8.30pm last night.

“Thieves gained entry via the back of the house. Keys and a white Range Rover Sport with the registration number L10 RUN was stolen, along with a number of other items including a laptop.

“Detectives are appealing for anyone with information or anyone who sees the vehicle to contact them on 101, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
