Alleged Irish betting scam sparks investigation

Pat Hickey, right, says a full investigation is underway

A betting scandal has rocked the Irish squad on day one of the Olympics.

According to this morning's Irish Independent, a full investigation is underway at Team Ireland after an allegation made against an unnamed Irish competitor.

It's a controversy the Irish team could have done without, especially on the first day of the Games.

The allegation is that on a previous occasion the unnamed Irish competitor made two bets backing an opponent to win an event in which they themselves were competing.

According to this morning's Irish Independent both bets were successful and the competitor made €3,600.

Olympic Council of Ireland President Pat Hickey has confirmed that a full investigation is now underway and that anyone found guilty could be kicked out of the Olympics.

However it's understood that is unlikely to happen because of the tight timeframe involved.
