John Heslin was the star for Westmeath and he got six points, all from frees to inflict Kildare’s third defeat in three games.

The Lilywhites are now second from bottom in the standings after they trailed 0-8 to 0-5 at half-time.

Fergal Conway opened the scoring for Kildare but Westmeath hit the next four scores with Lorcan Smith, Ger Egan and John Heslin hitting two frees.

Eoghan O’Flaherty and Padraig Fogarty got Kildare to within a point but Westmeath found another gear and the win puts them top.
