Nadal and Ferrer advance in Acapulco

Nadal reacts to his win.

Top seeds Rafael Nadal and David Ferrer advanced from their last-four clashes to set up an all-Spanish final at the Abierto Mexicano Telcel.

Second seed Nadal beat another Spaniard, Nicolas Almagro, 7-5 6-4 to reach his third consecutive singles final since making his comeback from knee problems.

One break per set was enough for Nadal to overcome third seed Almagro, who was the Acapulco champion in 2008 and 2009.

Ferrer, the three-time defending champion and world number four, will represent a step up in class for Nadal though.

He was taken to a third set by unseeded Italian Fabio Fognini, but asserted his authority to claim a 6-3 6-7 (5/7) 6-1 win.

Nadal and Ferrer have met 20 times previously, with Nadal winning 16, including each of the last five.

In the women’s draw, the top two seeds also made it through to the final as Sara Errani of Italy overcame France’s Alize Cornet and Carala Suarez Navarro came out on top in her all-Spanish clash with Silvia Soler-Espinosa.

Neither woman was unduly troubled as both top seed Errani and number two Suarez Navarro sealed 6-2 6-1 victories.

The pair have played seven times before, with world number eight Errani having won four of them.
