McIlroy's fortune grows

Rory McIlroy has already amassed a €13 million fortune.

According to The Sunday Times' third annual Sport Rich List - the 23-year-old from Hollywood, County Down has seen his personal wealth skyrocket by €5 million over the last year.

The list, which will be published in this weekend's Sunday Times, profiles the 100 richest sportsmen and women in Britain and Ireland.

McIlroy still has a long way to go to catch up with his fellow golfer Padraig Harrington - who is worth an estimated €40 million.

The list's co-compiler Philip Beresford said that Rory's image is the secret to his success:

"Winning tournaments raises his profile, everybody's excited about him and the sponsors follow him", he said.

"And he has absolutely the right image, young, clean cut, doesn't seem to do anything except play golf and he's got a lovely girlfriend".
