Paul McGinley joined Australian Richard Green on seven under at the top of the leaderboard when the Barclays Scottish Open resumed at Loch Lomond today.

The early start of 7.30am didn't seem to faze the Dubliner as he added to his opening 65 with a birdie at the long third.

Darren Clarke also put himself firmly into contention, climbing 19 places on the leaderboard to share 9th place on five under.

Meanwhile, Colin Montgomerie’s hopes of surviving the halfway cut took another blow when he pulled his approach to the 10th and bogeyed.

Already down in 112th place after his opening two-over 73, Europe’s Ryder Cup captain dropped to 126th of the 156-strong field as a result. Only the top 65 and ties go through to the closing 36 holes.

Playing partner Ernie Els remained two under after three more holes but Nick Dougherty, winner in Munich two weeks ago, double-bogeyed the 10th and slumped to two over.

Overnight leader Green was among the later starters, as were Rory McIlroy and Ian Poulter on three and two under.

Whether those two would have Lee Westwood as the third member of their group remained to be seen.

Westwood described himself as “stupid” for playing the first round with a chest infection that had prevented him sleeping and had a decision to take on teeing off again with the Open less than a week ago.
