McCririck backs local hero Killyglen for Grand National glory
Racing tipster John McCririck was backing a local winner as he made a flying visit to the North ahead of the Grand National.
With one in three people set to bet on Saturday’s showpiece at Aintree, the veteran expert was passing on his tips to Belfast punters.
“If you want one horse not to back for the Grand National, it’s my tip,” he joked. “I’ve gone for Killyglen – got a tremendous chance.”
He added: “If Killyglen wins, when it comes back on Sunday or Monday there should be a parade through the streets of Belfast.”
The Larne-trained 16-1 shot fell four fences from home in last year’s National. Jockey Robbie Power will be hoping to go the distance on Saturday.
McCririck was in the city as guest of local bookmaker McLean’s.
The tipster advised punters to get up early on Saturday if they want the best odds.
“Take a price in the morning,” he said. “Last year 39 of the 40 horses started at shorter prices than when they were advertised top price in the morning, so take a price.”
