Life's a Beach for Brown

Beach Club looks another fine juvenile from the David Brown supply line judged by his debut success at Thirsk this afternoon.

The Footstepsinthesand colt defied obvious traits of naivety to win the British Stallion Studs Supporting EBF Maiden Stakes in the manner of an exciting animal.

Brown's newcomer (5-1) always looked the best horse in the field, and galloped into a commanding lead a furlong and a half out.

Richard Mullen's mount blotted his copybook by veering badly left close home, but still had a length and a half in hand of George Rooke, who was fleetingly stopped in his stride by the winner.

A stewards inquiry was called, but the placings remained unaltered.

"It wasn't a surprise he won," said Doncaster-based Brown, who can look forward to a big week at York with the likes of Fire Eyes and Pearl Sea.

"I've thought a lot about him for a long time - everything was right for him and we were ready to go.

"He's shown that he's a very nice horse for the future.

"He just started hanging and he (Mullen) let him run across.

"He's that sort of horse - he likes to look at things - and he'll get better so quickly.

"He's got the potential to be a good bit better than that (a nursery horse)."

Mullen was, however, suspended two days (September 3-4) for careless riding.

Whozthecat (8-1) secured his first win since November 2010 with a game success in the Welcome To Yorkshire, Yorkshire Champions Handicap.

The Declan Carroll-trained five-year-old was always up with the speed on the stands side and scampered two lengths clear of Haajes under 7lb claimer Jason Hart, whose rigorous efforts in the saddle saw him referred to the BHA.

Shane Kelly's positivity in the Thirsk Racecourse Pavilion For Wedding Receptions Fillies' Handicap was rewarded with victory aboard Dorry K (13-2).

Kelly's mount took up the running three furlongs out and needed plenty of encouragement to keep Mistress Of Rome and Authora at bay by a respective half a length and a head.

It's a Man's World (17-2) showed similar fighting qualities to bring up his hat-trick in the welcometoherriotcountry.com Handicap for the Brian Ellison team.

Snow Bay led the field turning into the straight, but was quickly swamped by the winner and the Carroll-trained Prophesy, who were some way clear of the rest.

Ellison's on-song six-year-old, ridden by Paul Pickard, eventually won the argument by three-quarters of a length.

Pickard was also suspended two days (September 3-4) for careless riding.

Carroll and Hart soon went one better again, though, as Mick Slates (7-1) came with a powerful surge on the outside of the field to take the thirskracecourse.net Handicap.

Charlemagne Diva had earlier made a mockery of negative market vibes to win the Thirsk Racecourse Conference Centre Claiming Stakes.

The Ann Duffield-trained filly drifted to 9-1, but showed plenty of spirit to repel Coconut Kisses by a length and a quarter.

Duffield told Racing UK: "She's not the greatest filly in the world, but she's very tough and game.

"She's a winner, and that's the main thing.

"I can't see her progressing beyond claimers."

See Clearly (4-1 favourite) did the business for trainer Tim Easterby and jockey Jacqueline Coward in the six-furlong handicap for lady amateur riders.
