Katie Taylor wins first contested National lightweight title

Katie Taylor has won her first national title in the ring.

After years of earning her national titles without a contest, the London Olympic gold medallist scored an impressive victory over Tipperary's Shauna O'Keefe in tonight's lightweight final at the National Stadium.

Despite not having her father Pete as her cornerman, Taylor had too much skill and experience for her 21-year-old opponent.

Taylor won all three rounds comfortably to step-up her pursuit of back-to-back Olympic titles.

In the other big fight of the night at the Women's National Championships, Michaela Walsh beat defending champion Ceire Smith in the flyweight decider.
