Henson urged to keep his nose clean

20/12/2005 - 10:16:09
Former Wales captain Robert Jones has warned Gavin Henson he must maintain his discipline on the field to avoid heavy scrutiny of his conduct.

The 23-year-old fly-half faces a possible ban after being cited following a clash with Alex Moreno in Ospreys’ stormy Heineken Cup encounter with Leicester at the weekend.

Moreno was left with a broken nose after Henson reacted badly to a swinging arm from the Leicester prop before aiming a kick, which missed, at the floored Italian when he hit the ground.

Jones feels that incidents such as this will always be highlighted because of Henson’s public image and has urged him to clean up his act.

Jones, a former team-mate of Henson at Swansea, told The Sun: “I’m not saying Gavin has the same celebrity status as [David] Beckham but he is a massive personality in rugby circles and he has to be whiter than white to prevent the sort of outcry we are seeing now.

“I’ve no doubt Gavin feels he was provoked but he has to learn it is never right to take the law into your own hands, and that goes for him probably more than any other player in the game today.

“Gavin should know by now he has to keep his nose clean and, if he doesn’t realise it, the message should be drummed home by the Ospreys management and the Welsh team management.”
