Henman focusing Slam hopes on US Open

24/06/2005 - 10:19:40
Tim Henman admits Wimbledon no longer represents his best chance of winning a grand slam title.

Henman crashed out in the second round yesterday, beaten in five sets by Russian Dmitry Tursunov on Centre Court.

It was the British number one’s worst performance at the All England Club since he went out at the same stage in 1995 and surely ended his already slim chances of becoming the first home winner since 1936.

Henman has made no secret of the fact he feels the slower balls and courts have hindered his chances in SW19, and the 30-year-old has now put the US Open at the top of his list.

“I feel if I’m going on the speed of the conditions, then I would definitely put the US Open first,” said Henman, who lost to eventual champion Roger Federer in the last four last year in New York.

“In the summer hard-court swing I feel very comfortable with my game because I think I get a little bit of help, it’s a little bit quicker.”
