Arsenal were knocked out of their stride by fired-up Aston Villa but still missed the best chance of the opening 45 minutes at Villa Park.
Mathieu Flamini fired over the bar from 10 yards out seven minutes before the interval after having a clear run at the Villa goal.
But Villa were generally in command with Milan Baros looking sharp as they looked to end a seven-year run without a victory against the Gunners.
