Wicklow women celebrate famous All Ireland victory 110 years in the making

The women of Wicklow golf club are this evening celebrating an All Ireland victory that has eluded them for 110 years.

Having joined the All Ireland Irish Ladies Golf Union competition in 1904, this is the first time the club has carried off top honours.

They beat off competition from East Cork Golf Club in the All Ireland ILGU final at Monkstown Golf Course today to take the prized trophy.

"It's just so great for the club," said Wicklow club member Jackie Kavanagh.

"A win like this brings everybody together...Everyone worked really hard to get here. The competition started back in April and here we are now. It's great."

The members of the Wicklow team are aged 19 and up. The five members, and the holes on which they won are:

- Niamh Murphy (20th)

- Kate Roche (18th)

- Phyl Long (18th)

- Bernie O'Donoghue (14th)

- Clodagh Doyle (called in, played to 15th)

Una Doyle captained the team.

Katie, in common with her teammates, acknowledged the significance of the event when she won her round.

"She just burst out crying," said Jackie.

We bet her dad Kieran, who was caddying for her, wasn't too dry-eyed himself.

Congratulations, ladies!
