Pace too much for Clyburn

Home favourite Lee-Anne Pace birdied the second extra hole to beat England’s Holly Clyburn in a play-off for the Cell C South African Women’s Open on Sunday.

Pace birdied the 18th in a closing round of 67 to set the clubhouse target on five under par, a target then matched by Clyburn thanks to a final round of 70.

After the pair both made par on the first extra hole, they returned to the 18th for a second time and Clyburn’s approach found the water short of the green, while Pace hit hers to within three feet of the flag.

“I’ve always wanted to win this tournament,” Pace said after claiming her ninth Ladies European Tour title.

“It was definitely one of my goals this year, so to do it today in front of so many lovely people supporting me was just a dream come true.”

Clyburn almost found the water left of the green on the 18th in regulation and took an extra club in the play-off, but admitted: “I thought it was okay but I caught it slightly heavy.”
