Leona Maguire makes bold bid for title

By Kevin Murphy

Irish woman Leona Maguire finished runner-up in only her third professional tournament in the Ladies British Masters at the Buckinghamshire course yesterday.

World amateur No 1 Maguire just missed out on a playoff after bogeying her final hole when she required a par putt. But the Cavan woman was far from downbeat after a terrific week.

“It was a great opportunity to play against the best European Tour pros so I was delighted with my finish. It’s a pity about the way it ended but I am happy with the week.”

This was a phenomenal performance from the Irish woman to finish a shot behind American Beth Allen, who claimed her first ever title on 12-under par. The rising star of Irish golf revealed that the wind conditions had made club selection difficult.

“I knew it was tight coming up 18 and we didn’t really know where the wind was coming from. I thought it was downwind, but Dad thought it was into the wind and it was probably the wrong club from the tee.

“I wasn’t that nervous and I hit a great shot, it was just the wrong club.”

Maguire will attempt to pre-qualify for the Women’s British Open next week while she also revealed that she has received an invitation for the Evian Championship in September, on of the five LPGA Majors.
