Holmes back in the swing of things
JB Holmes put the disappointment of losing a play-off at the Farmers Insurance Open behind him in the first round of the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am.
The 32-year-old from Kentucky, who lost out to Jason Day at Torrey Pines, fired a 64 to grab a share of the lead with compatriot Justin Hicks.
Holmes told www.pgatour.com: “I’ve just got to keep reminding myself it was a great week for me and I did everything I could do and just carry that on to this week. Maybe things will go a little bit different this week.”
Of the seven players a shot behind on seven under par, the name of John Daly was the biggest surprise.
The 48-year-old two-time major champion took advantage of benign conditions as he seeks to end a winless run in PGA tournaments stretching back to 2004.
Fellow Americans Jim Furyk, Brandt Snedeker, JJ Henry, Chesson Hadley and Dudley Hart also managed 65s, while the best placed Europeans were England’s Brian Davis, Germany’s Marcel Siem and Ireland’s Padraig Harrington, all on four under par.
Another Irishman, Shane Lowry, was three under, England duo Ian Poulter and Greg Owen were one under, while Ireland’s Paul McGinley was another three shots adrift after the first round.
