Fergie: I got more out of speaking to Ryder Cup team than they did

Alex Ferguson has spoken of his delight at being involved with Europe's victorious Ryder Cup campaign.

The former Manchester United manager addressed Paul McGinley's players before and during their comprehensive victory over the United States at Gleneagles last month.

Ferguson was asked to speak as a result of being so successful in a high-pressure sporting environment, and he has admitted to enjoying everything about it.

"It was fantastic, the best excitement I've ever had outside football," he told MUTV.

"It was unbelievable. I went on the first tee of the last day and the fans were magnificent, the players responded really well. You talk about pressure on a player, what an examination that is. All of a sudden the silence is deafening."

On what he spoke to the players about, he added: "It was talk of experience of being a favourite.

"Europe were favourites, there's nothing wrong with that, it's just about living up to the expectations. I think I got more out of it than they did.

"I was excited to speak to such great golfers.

"It was a great chemistry and there was a bit of banter afterwards because Poults (Ian Poulter) was an Arsenal fan, he gave me a bit of stick.

"Lee Westwood is a Forest fan and Tom Bjorn is a Liverpool fan and he was giving me stick. I enjoyed all that."
