Galway and Wexford take Walsh Cup wins
Galway led from start to finish to set up a Bord na Móna Walsh Cup semi-final against either Dublin or UCD next weekend, while Wexford also advanced to the last four following today’s action.
At Dr. Cullen Park, Carlow, Galway recorded a comfortable 2-15 to 1-9 win over Carlow to set up a last four tie.
Anthony Cunningham fielded seven of the side which lost the All-Ireland final replay last September, including Joe Canning who fired 1-8 for the visitors in this nine-point win.
A Canning penalty helped the Tribesmen take a 1-2 to 0-0 lead early on, with Shane Kavanagh responding with a goal for the hosts.
Galway led by 1-8 to 1-2 after 26 minutes, and extended their lead to 1-10 to 1-3 at the interval
Marty Kavanagh (0-5) tried his utmost to keep Carlow in touch, but a Damien Hayes goal powered Galway to a 2-13 to 1-6 lead.
Carlow were dealt a further blow late on following the dismissal of Sean Murphy.
Wexford kept their 100% record at Blackwater intact as they claimed a 1-24 to 1-15 win over Offaly.
Nine players were on target for the hosts in this nine-point win, including Gary Moore who top-scored with 12 points.
The sides were level on three occasions inside the opening quarter, until a Derek Molloy goal helped Offaly regain the lead.
Molloy's goal helped keep Offaly on top for the remainder of the opening half, and they led by 1-10 to 0-10 at the break.
Wexford bounced back thanks to the efforts of Moore and David Redmond on the restart, with Liam Dunne's side taking the lead midway through the half after team captain Richie Kehoe pointed a 65 metre free.
This gave Wexford a lead that they wouldn't relinquish, with a penalty goal from Mark Fanning pushing the hosts into a 1-21 to 1-14 lead.
Paul Morris and Moore added points late on, to just one from Derek Mooney for the visitors as Wexford booked a semi-final date with Kilkenny.
