WATCH: GAA abroad: Check out the Australasian Championships

They may be far from home but Irish emigrants continue to promote our national games, as seen in this video from the weekend.

The 2016 Australasian Championships, otherwise known as the State Games, took place in Brisbane last weekend.

The clip from Finals Day highlighted the Irish-born athletes leading their teams to success in the sunshine.

There was a dramatic conclusion to the Ladies Football Final when former Monaghan All-Ireland midfielder Yvonne Connell shrugged off a broken finger to fire a winning goal.

New South Wales captain Laura Kelly was overjoyed with the win and even more so with the continued success in promoting the games.

“The winner today was ladies football,” Kelly said. “All this way over in Australia, to have that standard out there today, it's absolutely brilliant.”

Social media helps to strengthen the links between the Irish players abroad and clubs at home still cheering them on every step of the way.

Watergrasshill GAA were delighted to be able to congratulate their native son on victory in Brisbace, writing: “Congratulations to our local man Seán O'Leary captaining his winning Victoria Team in their hurling final .

“Fair play Séan you haven't forgotten your roots, mentioning your local club back home!”

The GAA at its finest.
