Tipperary hurler Noel McGrath will undergo surgery on Friday for testicular cancer, a statement from the county board confirmed this morning.
In a press release, the board said: "The Tipperary senior hurling squad, senior hurling management, Tipperary County Board and all Tipperary supporters wish Noel well during his time and look forward to welcoming him back in the Tipperary colours in due course."
Social media is already awash with best wishes for the popular two-time All Star, 24, whose brother John has been making waves with the team in this year's league campaign.
Early detection has been vital in at least four high-profile Gaelic players making full recoveries from testicular cancer in recent years. In August 2006, Cork star forward Joe Deane was diagnosed and played his first game the following January.
Former Kildare star Dermot Earley endured the same problem in 2002 to return with flying colours for the Lilywhites. Eight years ago, Mayo midfielder Ronan McGarrity's condition was recognised in March and he was back lining out in Mayo colours the following July.
In 2008, Fermanagh's Marty McGrath's cancer was detected early. He had surgery the Thursday before an Ulster semi-final with Derry and was able to play the remainder of the championship.
McGrath's news comes as a report this morning claims former hurler of the year Lar Corbett will rejoin the Tipperary panel in training this evening.
